A family company in Patagonia Argentina, whose owners, the Mazquiarán
family, are third generation sheep-raisers.
Guenguel was born when this family decided to look for diversity, a family
that since 1920 is dedicated to the traditional raising of sheep in the
region of Patagonia for the purpose of producing wool.
Guenguel is principally oriented to the foreseeable and sustainable
production of Guanaco fiber, as a complement to the production of extra fine
and fine Merino Wool.
Guenguel’s most innovative line is related with the Rational Management
and Sustainable Use of the Guanaco. The Guanaco is a wild camelidae
originally from Patagonia; it possesses a well-known high quality fiber for
the textile industry, used for the confection of valuable garments.
The sustainable raising of the Guanaco is introduced to Guenguel’s
productive scheme with the objective of complementing the activity related
to the extra fine and fine wool production.
Guenguel produces and offers natural fibers to the world, transformed in
garments of Patagonian quality and warmth
Guenguel’s objective is to consolidate the sustainable and predictable
production process of natural fine special fibers in Patagonia, which tends
to partially cover the unsatisfied international demand linked to a
specialized segment in the production of high quality threads and garments
derived from this type of fibers.
This first stage success, which we called “Proyecto Madre” (Mother
Project), is just the beginning of a much more promising business that will
likely incorporate vast plain extensions in the Santa Cruz and Chubut
provinces in Patagonia.
With this goal, Guenguel plans to implement an extensive program of transfer
of technology based on its developments, which will allow the spread of the
economic, social and environmental benefits of raising guanaco, and in the
production of special fine fibers, to other rural establishments in the
region of Patagonia in general.
Guenguel decided to move forward in the chain of value, integrating the
process from the production of the fiber until the final product that is the
piece of clothing.
The greatest technological level possible has been incorporated under the
most strict quality standards at the level of production and processing of
raw materials.
With this objective, since the year 2000, all Guenguel productive systems
have been incorporated under the process of Organic Certification audited by
OIA (Organización Internacional Agropecuaria- Farming and Animal Technology
International Organization).
All the procedures developed by Guenguel have the express approval of the
National Authority for the Application of the Convention CITES (Convención
sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora
Silvestres – Convention on International Commerce of Threatened Species of
Wild Fauna and Flora).
